At The Comma Space, we believe driver-assist technology should be open, transparent, and community-driven — not locked behind subscriptions or proprietary walls. That’s why we’re excited to share that OpenPilot compatibility for Rivian Gen 2 is coming soon — and it’s already being tested on real roads.
Led by Developer Lukas Loetkolben
This milestone is being led by Lukas Loetkolben, an independent developer and longtime OpenPilot contributor who’s been instrumental in bringing OpenPilot to Rivian vehicles. Lukas has spent months reverse-engineering and integrating Rivian’s Gen 2 architecture — decoding CAN messaging, adapting sensor fusion, and ensuring OpenPilot’s safety systems work seamlessly with Rivian’s next-generation platform.
He’s joined by a growing network of Rivian owners and testers who are putting early builds through rigorous real-world conditions: long highway stretches, winding backroads, urban commutes, and everything in between. Their testing and feedback are helping refine tuning, edge-case handling, and reliability — crucial steps toward an official public release.
Nearly 1,000 Gen 1 Drivers — and Growing Fast
While Gen 2 testing ramps up, the Rivian Gen 1 OpenPilot community has already taken off — with nearly 1,000 active users and counting. In fact, it’s now Comma’s fastest-growing user base, as R1T and R1S owners continue to adopt OpenPilot as a powerful upgrade over factory systems.
Gen 1 users enjoy all the benefits of OpenPilot’s open-source autonomy stack, including:
- Smooth lane centering and adaptive cruise on highways and city streets
- Hands-free driving on any road, from interstates to rural routes, when conditions allow
- Stop-and-go traffic handling
- Continuous software improvements via OTA updates
- Community-driven development, where feedback loops directly improve future releases
Every mile driven by this growing community contributes valuable data and insights that strengthen OpenPilot’s capabilities — paving the way for Gen 2 readiness.
Rivian’s Own Path: The Autonomy Platform+
At the same time, Rivian is charting its own course with the Rivian Autonomy Platform+, a proprietary system built into Gen 2 vehicles. The platform is currently included for free, offering advanced driver-assist functions like lane keeping, adaptive cruise, and highway automation.
However, Rivian has confirmed that Autonomy Platform+ will shift to a paid subscription model in the near future — following the broader industry trend toward monthly autonomy access fees. What’s free today could soon carry an ongoing cost.
That’s where OpenPilot stands apart: an open, extensible system that evolves continuously, without recurring charges or corporate lock-in.
What’s Next
Lukas and the test group are continuing to validate performance, polish safety logic, and expand test coverage before broader rollout. Here’s what to expect next:
- Ongoing Real-World Testing
Refinement of Gen 2 performance and features under diverse conditions. - Public Release
Once validation is complete, Gen 2 OpenPilot compatibility will roll out for general availability — with all necessary hardware (minus the Comma3X itself), including the vehicle-specific wiring harness and adapter components, available for purchase through Lukas’s shop at xnor.shop.
Why It Matters
- Open innovation over closed ecosystems: OpenPilot offers true ownership and freedom.
- Community-powered growth: The fastest-growing user base in Comma’s history continues to shape the future of autonomy.
- Future-proof flexibility: Even as OEMs move toward subscription-only autonomy, OpenPilot remains an independent, one-time-purchase alternative.
The Road Ahead
Rivian Gen 2 OpenPilot compatibility is more than a technical milestone — it’s proof of what open collaboration can achieve. Thanks to Lukas Loetkolben and the dedicated community of testers and drivers, Rivian owners will soon have a genuine choice in how they experience assisted driving.
Stay tuned to The Comma Space for progress updates, testing reports, and installation guides as we move closer to launch.
