Beartech Carry Case vs 3D-Printed: Which One Wins for the Comma 3X?

As a Comma 3X user and daily driver, protecting your hardware when it’s not mounted in your vehicle is important—especially if you’re constantly updating firmware, testing new models, or switching between vehicles. For the past few months, I’ve been using a custom 3D-printed carry case I designed myself (available on Thingiverse). It reuses the foam from the original Comma box, holds the C3X securely, and it’s surprisingly durable. But after getting my hands on the Beartech Carry Case, I’m making the switch—and here’s why.

🧰 My 3D-Printed Case: Big, Protective… and Bulky

The original goal behind my 3D-printed case was to make something functional using what I already had. Reusing the factory foam gave it excellent padding, and the hard plastic shell added decent protection. But the trade-off? It’s huge. The case is awkward to pack, takes up too much space in a backpack or glovebox, and lacks flexibility when it comes to accessories or different mount configurations.

🐻 Beartech Carry Case: Small, Sleek, and Surprisingly Versatile

The Beartech case immediately feels more refined. It’s compact, lightweight, and built with quality materials. The molded interior is perfectly sized for a Comma 3X with the Beartech mount installed, but it also works well with other popular mounts.

I’m currently using a Chun mount, and after trimming a bit of the interior foam with a sharp knife, the C3X fits securely with no wiggle. I also appreciate the thoughtful extras: there are small compartments that can hold a short USB-C cable and a microfiber cloth—perfect for cleaning the screen or quick plug-and-play power swaps.

✅ My Verdict: Beartech Is the Better Everyday Case

While I’m proud of the custom case I built, the Beartech Carry Case is clearly the better option for everyday use. It’s more portable, has built-in accessory storage, and offers a snug fit for a variety of mount configurations. Whether you’re a weekend tester or a full-time Openpilot tweaker, this case is a smart upgrade.
