After nearly a year and a half of development, Sunnypilot is back — and it’s not just an update. It’s a complete rewrite focused on stability, modularity, and long-term maintainability.
This release (v2025.001.000) aligns Sunnypilot more closely than ever with the comma.ai openpilot ecosystem, ensuring smoother operation, safer driving, and a cleaner codebase designed to evolve for years to come.
Major Highlights
Major Rewrite & Safety Compliance
Built from the ground up to fully align with comma.ai’s openpilot safety standards, this release ensures greater consistency, reliability, and test coverage across the stack.
Modular Assistive Driving System (MADS)
MADS now offers a unified framework for independent lateral and longitudinal engagement — the foundation for future modularity and advanced driving features.
Neural Network Lateral Control (NNLC)
Introducing NNLC, a new torque-based lateral control system that delivers smoother, more natural steering behavior, even in complex driving environments.
Dynamic Experimental Control (DEC)
A next-gen intelligent longitudinal control system that adapts dynamically to real-world driving conditions for refined acceleration and braking.
Driving Model Manager
Manage, cache, and update from 80+ supported driving models with the ability to favorite, swap, and automatically update your preferred configurations.
Speed Limit Assist (SLA)
Now featuring @pfeiferj’s mapd integration, SLA offers a more complete and accurate speed limit data layer for smarter driving.
Intelligent Cruise Button Management (ICBM)
Designed for vehicles without full longitudinal control, ICBM emulates button presses to manage cruise speeds intelligently and safely.
Redesigned User Interface
A completely refreshed off-road experience — with new panels, customizable visuals, and model management features built for clarity and control.
Technical Infrastructure Overhaul
Under the hood, sunnypilot now runs with:
- A custom Cereal implementation
- Improved parameter caching
- Docker-based CI/CD
- Regression testing for long-term reliability
Together, these improvements create a stronger foundation for ongoing open-source innovation.
New Vehicle Support & Community Growth
Newly supported vehicles include:
- Honda City (2023)
- Honda N-Box (2018)
- Honda Odyssey (2021–2025)
A huge thank-you to the 15+ new contributors across Sunnypilot and opendbc who made this release possible!
Compatibility & Versioning
Device Support
Starting with this release, Sunnypilot supports comma 3X and comma-supported devices only. The original comma 3 (C3/TICI) is no longer supported in this branch, but may still receive limited maintenance updates.
Versioning Scheme
Sunnypilot now uses the year.minor.patch format — for example, 2025.001.000 = (year 2025, first milestone, initial patch) — offering clearer progression and yearly milestones.
